Achieving a good work-life balance is tricky and working from home can present even more challenges. Although it can have many benefits like more flexibility, zero commute, increased productivity, and more quality time with loved ones, working from home can make it difficult to unplug. With the physical boundaries between your workspace and personal life now virtually non-existent, it is more important than ever to redefine work-life balance. Here are 5 tips to help you achieve more balance.
Designate Your Workspace
It’s important to create a designated workspace to help you stay focused while you’re working from home. As tempting as it is, don’t work from your bed! Separating your areas will make it easier to mentally switch from work mode to play mode. More important than the physical separation is what function you assign them in your mind.
Plan a Schedule
Creating and sticking to a schedule can help you maintain productivity and help reduce the stress that comes with a long day of work. Set aside time to review the IDS Schedule and add sessions to your calendar before the event begins to get the most out of your experience. Establishing a beginning, middle, and end will make it easier to set boundaries with your family, housemates, and coworkers.
Set Boundaries
Communication is key! If you’re living with roommates, a significant other, or children, proactively communicate your time restraints and work schedule ahead of time. Facilitating a conversation and setting boundaries will minimize distractions as you journey through your day.
Take a Break
It is easy to get bogged down or overwhelmed by your workday — jumping from task to task without time to reflect. Taking a few 10 – 15 minute breaks throughout your day to escape the screen will help you maintain optimal functionality and productivity. So stretch your legs, get some water, and call a friend.
Setting aside time to take care of yourself will bring balance to your day; it gives you the energy and focus to tackle the next task with your mind refreshed. Go for a walk outside for some fresh air, eat a healthy lunch, watch an episode of your favorite show, or do a workday yoga practice; anything that brings you joy and peace will positively impact your work-life balance.
